Common problems
The Volt isn't in the browser's list
- Check it’s plugged in and switched on, and that a KVM switch, if you use one, points at this computer.
- Unplug it, plug it back in, and choose Connect Volt again.
- Use Edge or Chrome: other browsers have no list at all.
Connect Volt is greyed out
The browser can’t talk to USB devices. Use Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, with JavaScript on.
The faders are greyed out, or spring back
- Greyed out, not connected: the status line says so. Connect the Volt.
- Spring back, no mix yet: a note at the top says so. Choose a mix on the welcome panel.
- Spring back, another Volt Mixer has it: a note at the top says which. Close the other one.
- Spring back just after connecting: Volt Mixer checks for a few seconds that nothing else is using the Volt, then puts your mix on it.
Levels went back after switching computers
Each computer sends its own copy of the mix when it connects. Bring your latest across with a link or your phone.
The mix changed when UAD Console opened
Console sends its own mix when it starts. Close it, then choose Settings › Your mix › Apply to send yours again.
Clicks, pops or stuttering video
Sound needs the computer’s attention every few milliseconds, and a click is a moment it didn’t get it. If videos stutter too, the whole computer is being held up, not just the Volt. Try these in order:
- Plug the Volt straight into the computer, into a port at the back, not through a hub or KVM switch.
- Keep Universal Audio’s driver. On Windows it’s the Volt’s ASIO driver: choose it in your recording app. Stand-ins like ASIO4ALL click more, not less.
- Use 48 kHz everywhere. Set the same rate in your recording app and in Windows (Settings › System › Sound, the Volt’s output, Format). 24-bit is plenty; bit depth doesn’t cause clicks.
- Raise the buffer size in your recording app: 128 samples to record, 256 or 512 to mix. Listen through the Volt’s own mixer while you record, so a bigger buffer doesn’t delay what you hear.
- Free up the processor. If Task Manager shows it near 100%, pause the busy app, or lower it: Details, right-click it, Set priority › Below normal.
- Update the network driver from your computer or motherboard maker. An old one is a common cause, even for sound. In Device Manager, under the network adapter’s Advanced settings, turn off Energy Efficient Ethernet.
- Turn off USB power saving: in the power plan’s advanced settings, set USB selective suspend to Disabled.
Still clicking? The free LatencyMon names the driver that’s holding the computer up.
The desktop app vanished when I closed it
It’s still running in the tray, with Close to tray on. On Windows, turn its icon on in Settings › Personalisation › Taskbar › Other system tray icons to keep it in view. On GNOME, install the AppIndicator extension.
The Volt's display stays on overnight
Turn on Volt display off at sleep in the desktop app. The website can’t do this: it isn’t running when the computer sleeps.
My phone can't connect to the phone remote
I can't find where to scan a mix's QR code
Volt Mixer doesn’t scan: your phone’s camera, or the other computer’s, does. The mix’s QR code is in Settings › Your mix › QR code. See Your phone.
The guide's search says it isn't available
The search loads the guide’s index the first time you open it. If it can’t, usually because the connection dropped, it says “Search isn’t available right now”. Check your connection and type again: it tries again each time.
Messages about connecting
Messages appear in a bar at the top of the mixer, like this one. Each can be dismissed with its ×.
“Volt Mixer can't reach a Volt from here”
A panel shown in Firefox, Safari and on phones, which can’t talk to USB devices. If you opened a mix link there, the panel shows that mix to carry instead, and says the same. Open Volt Mixer in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome on the computer the Volt is plugged into. On a phone, you can still carry a mix or use the phone remote.
“No Volt was chosen”
The browser’s list closed without a choice. Choose Connect Volt again and pick Volt 4 Gen 2.
“Connected, but the Volt didn't send its settings”
Unplug the Volt and plug it back in.
“This Volt has firmware … which this page hasn't been checked against”
Volt Mixer shows the Volt’s settings but changes nothing yet. Choose Use anyway to go on.
Messages about your mix
“That works once this computer has your mix”
The faders are locked until you choose a starting mix on the welcome panel.
“Mix received. It will be applied when…”
Nothing to do: the link is kept until the Volt connects, or the other Volt Mixer closes.
“That isn't a Volt Mixer mix link”
Copy the link again, whole, from Settings › Your mix on the other computer.
Messages about another Volt Mixer
“Volt Mixer is open in another tab or window”
Use that one. This one takes over when it closes.
“Volt Mixer is also open in the desktop app or another browser”
The other one has the mix. Close it, and this page’s mix goes back on the Volt.
“Volt Mixer is also open in a browser on this computer”
Shown in the desktop app. Nothing to do: the app keeps the mix, and the browser leaves it alone.
“The other Volt Mixer closed”
Nothing to do: this page’s mix is back on the Volt.
